Lok Sabha passed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on
Marriage) Bill, 2018. The bill makes the practice of instant triple talaq (divorce)
or talaq (divorce)-e-biddat among Muslims a penal offence. Under the proposed
law, giving instant triple talaq (divorce) will be illegal and void, and will
attract a jail term of three years for the husband. Only wife, or person related
to her by blood, or marriage, can file case against husband. Under the Bill,
Muslim women will be entitled to financial assistance from the husband. Magistrate
can grant bail to accused, but only after hearing the wife. The bill will now go
to Rajya sabha for approval.
