The Centre opposed in the Supreme Court a plea to reconsider
the legal validity of the 157-year-old adultery law under Section 497 of the Indian
Penal Code punishing only the man and not the married woman for adultery,
treating her as a victim, not an abettor of crime. Currently under Section 497
of the IPC, the crime is applicable only to the man who has sexual relation
with a woman who isn't his wife.
